Writing from the Heart

Last week, I hope you were inspired to write a love story.
This week, I want you to think about what it means to write from your heart.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, anyway?  Yoo, hoo, anybody? Any thoughts on the subject?

I've heard all kinds of explanations:
*write about what you love
*write about what you know
*write about whatever has inspired you
*write whatever comes into your mind
*write in the genre that fits you
*write using your innermost feelings

As you can see, there is no right answer.  But the above list gives you stuff to think about, right?

Let me leave you with a poem, a little ditty from me to you (from my heart):

I don’t like to write about butts, poop, or snot.

It seems like I write about nature a lot.

I’m not fond of vampires or stories with gore.

I like trees and weather, animals, and more.

I bet YOU have an idea for a good book.

Rewrite it, revise it, and take a good look.

So, take out your pen and get ready to start.

I hope you’re inspired to write from your heart.

Be My Valentine

Well, it's Valentine's Day, so I could ask you to write about someone you love or someone who loves you...but I won't. Instead, I'm offering up some lovable pets in the hope that they will inspire you to write a love story that involves the love of a very special animal.

This is Nollie, our dog.

This is Vannie, a.k.a. Pooper Dude, our bunny.

Got some ideas? Get writing!

Let's Split

So, in case you don't know, split infinitives are a puzzle--one that writers (far and wide) mull over on a daily basis. It keeps us awake at night, gives us headaches, and makes our teeth hurt. I promise.

Recognize this?
Space… the Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

The infinitive is to go. The adverb is boldly. And look where boldly boldly sits! It's doing a split, I tell you! *shakes a finger at the horror of it all*

Get it? Enough said? Good.

Now fuhgetaboutit. BECAUSE... many grammar teachers say that it is absolutely OK to split the infinitive.

I will definitely sleep better tonight.

ZZzzzzzz!
